The Reno Modern Brass is one of the core ensembles of reNEW Music, Reno's only ensemble focusing on performing, premiering, and championing new music. Presenting new works by local and international composers, this organization is committed to sharing unique music from diverse genres with the community of Reno. Founded in 2018, Reno Modern Brass is a locally-focused brass chamber ensemble devoted to the performance and creation of music of living composers. Our mission is to commission new works, perform recently written masterpieces, and discover neglected great works from the recent past.

Members

Jef Derderian

Trumpet

Jef has been performing music for over 20 Years and holds a degrees from University of Nevada, Reno (M.M. and B.M., Trumpet Performance). He has performed extensively with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, Reno Chamber Orchestra, and Reno Jazz Orchestra, and has performed on tour with the March Forth Marching Band and others. Jef is currently a member of the Great Basin Brass Quintet.

Brandon Sherman

Trumpet

Equally adept as a classical trumpet player, jazz trumpet player, and composer, Brandon is a member of the critically-acclaimed ensemble Chord Four. He holds degrees from California Institute of the Arts (M.F.A., Jazz Studies) and University of Nevada, Reno (B.M., Trumpet Performance) . He has performed extensively at jazz venues in the Los Angeles and New York areas, as well as tours throughout Eastern Europe. With Chord Four, he has won first place in the first international CONAD Jazz Contest and has performed at the Umbria Jazz Festival (Italy) as well as many jazz venues throughout the United States. Brandon was a recipient of the 2010 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer’s Award.

Kevin Miescke

Horn

Dr. Kevin Miescke serves as Instructor of Music at the University of Nevada, Reno, Department of Music, and is an active performer around the country as a soloist, orchestral musician, and chamber musician. In addition to performing with the Reno Modern Brass, he is a charter member of the Skylark Horn Quartet. With the quartet Kevin has enjoyed premiering new works with the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, and appearing as soloists with the Columbus (Indiana) Symphony Orchestra, and at The Frankenwald Brass Festival in Hoff, Germany. He is a regular performer with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, and has performed with other ensembles such as San Antonio Symphony, Champaign- Urbana Symphony Orchestra, Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Peoria Symphony Orchestra, Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra, and held the second horn position with the Round Rock Symphony Orchestra. Kevin has earned the degrees of Doctor of Music from Indiana University, Master of Music from the University of Texas at Austin, and Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Paul Fleming

Trombone

Paul is an active performer and music educator in the Reno area. He is a regular substitute trombonist with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, including Acting Second Trombonist with the Phil from 2017-2019, and has performed many times as substitute trombonist with the Reno Chamber Orchestra. Paul has received degrees from The Boston Conservatory (M.M., Trombone Performance) and University of Nevada, Reno (B.M., Music Education) studying with Leonard Neidhold, John Faieta, Dr. A. G. McGrannahan III, and Norman Bolter. While living in Boston, he performed with many organizations including the Brookline Symphony Orchestra, Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, MetroWest Opera, Boston Opera Collaborative. Former member of Boston Modern Brass and Equilibrium Ensemble, chamber organizations focused on performing and premiering new works. Paul has appeared as soloist with the Ruby Mountain Symphony and Hickman Brass Ensemble. Paul currently teaches music at Hunter Lake and Jessie Beck Elementary Schools.

Andrew Williams

Bass Trombone

Andrew Williams has been performing professionally in the Reno area for 27 years, performing with the Reno Chamber Orchestra, Reno Jazz Orchestra, Nevada Opera and Ballet organizations, and is a contracted musician with the Reno Philharmonic. He received degrees from the University of Illinois (M.M., Bass Trombone Performance) and University of Nevada, Reno (B.M., Music Education). Andrew has taught music in Nevada for 20 years and has taught such notable trombonists as Paul M.F. Fleming. He is currently Director of Bands at Clayton Middle School.
