About Us

Founded in 2018, Reno Modern Brass is a locally-focused brass chamber ensemble devoted to the performance and creation of music of living composers. Our mission is to commission new works, perform recently written masterpieces, and discover neglected great works from the recent past. 

Members

Jef Derderian

Trumpet

Jef has been performing music for over 20 Years and holds a degrees from University of Nevada, Reno (M.M. and B.M., Trumpet Performance). He has performed extensively with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, Reno Chamber Orchestra, and Reno Jazz Orchestra, and has performed on tour with the March Forth Marching Band and others. Jef is currently a member of the Great Basin Brass Quintet.

Tony Cataldo

Trumpet

With his wild and wonderful free nature, Tony Cataldo refers to his instrument of choice as the cumbersome and unwieldy trumpet. Inspired at the early age of 10 by his music teacher, Tony quickly rose to the top in the field of music and additionally enjoys playing the electric guitar and bass guitar. Throughout his life to date, Tony has given thousands of free music clinics that he generously provides to the public every time he picks up an instrument. 

Kevin Miescke

Horn

Dr. Kevin Miescke serves as Instructor of Music at the University of Nevada, Reno,  Department of Music, and is an active performer around the country as a soloist, orchestral  musician, and chamber musician. In addition to performing with the Reno Modern Brass, he is a charter member of the Skylark Horn Quartet. With the quartet Kevin has enjoyed premiering new works with the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, and appearing as soloists with the Columbus (Indiana) Symphony Orchestra, and at The Frankenwald Brass Festival in Hoff, Germany. He is a regular performer with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, and has performed with other ensembles such as San Antonio Symphony, Champaign- Urbana Symphony Orchestra, Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Peoria Symphony Orchestra, Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra, and held the second horn position with the Round Rock Symphony Orchestra. Kevin has earned the degrees of Doctor of Music from Indiana University, Master of Music from the University of Texas at Austin, and Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Paul Fleming

Trombone

Paul is an active performer, music educator, and New Music advocate, and is a founding President of reNEW Music. Paul has received degrees from The Boston Conservatory (M.M., Trombone Performance) and University of Nevada, Reno (B.M., Music Education) studying with Leonard Neidhold, John Faieta, Dr. A. G. McGrannahan III, and Norman Bolter. Paul has performed many times with the Reno Philharmonic (Acting Second Trombonist, 2017-2019), Reno Chamber Orchestra, Reno Jazz Orchestra, and many other local professional musical groups. He was a member of Boston Modern Brass and Equilibrium Ensemble, chamber organizations focused on performing and premiering new works, as well as Brookline Symphony Orchestra, MetroWest Opera, and Boston Opera Collaborative, and performed with the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. Paul has appeared as soloist with the Ruby Mountain Symphony and Hickman Brass Ensemble. Paul currently teaches  music at Hunter Lake and Mount Rose Elementary Schools.

Gary Mayne

Bass Trombone

Gary Mayne has performed, recorded, taught, presented clinics and provided masterclasses at Universities, public schools, conferences, and festivals around the world.  His presentation “What’s Your W.H.U.T.” has been given at schools such as the Eastman School of Music, Arizona State University, University of North Texas, University of Iowa, the University of Nevada, and many more! Gary served as the trombone teacher at the LeBam Music Camp in Beirut, Lebanon as well as an ensemble director at the Cyprus Jazz Workshop in Nicosia, Cyprus. 

As a big band performer he has performed and recorded regularly with groups such as the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the Ben Markley Big Band, The Arturo Sandoval Mambo Big Band the David Caffey Jazz Orchestra, the Socrates Garcia Latin Jazz Orchestra, the 9th and Lincoln Orchestra, the Steve Owen Big Band, The Fred Hess Big Band,  The Steve Lippia Big Band, the Dan Gailey Jazz Orchestra, the Colorado Jazz Orchestra, the H2 Big Band, the Fred Hess Big Band and many more!  He has also performed at many IAJE or JEN conferences as a professional and at the International Trombone Conference in Iowa City.  As a symphonic musician, Gary has performed with the Colorado Symphony, the Reno Philharmonic, the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, Opera Colorado, the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra, the Wyoming Symphony and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and has toured as a member of the SPARK Brass Quintet.

Tyler Cravines

Drums

Originally from Clovis, CA, Tyler has been playing and teaching music professionally in the greater Reno/Tahoe area for 17+ years. Having completed a Bachelor of Jazz Music Performance degree and teaching credential from the University of Nevada, Reno, he is experienced in many musical techniques, styles, and improvisational concepts. Tyler has recorded and performed his own music and appeared on many local and professional artist recordings and performances as a preferred accompanist and producer. He is well versed in jazz tradition and embraces and encourages the expressionism that comes with free thinking and improvising. Currently, Tyler is pursuing a Master of Education degree from Sierra Nevada College. He is also the current drummer for Engelbert Humperdinck, and has accompanied him on US/UK/Asia tours. Tyler continues to hone his educational and performing skills through collaboration, reflection, and carefully planned exploration.
